Police in Limpopo, South Africa, are "shocked" that a man's body was stolen after his grave was dug up.
The body of Modike Philemon Masedi, who was buried on January 22, was stolen, and the coffin was abandoned.
Pretoria – Police in Limpopo's Mokwakwaila District have launched a "unusual" investigation into a case of grave violation and theft of a corpse after the body of a deceased man was dug out of the grave and stolen.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo of the Limpopo SAPS said the incident occurred in the Senakwe Section of the Mokwakwaila policing area.
"On Sunday, February 5, 2023, it was claimed that a family member went to the cemetery to clean the grave site in anticipation of the approaching ceremony for unveiling the monument. When she arrived, she found that the grave had been excavated open and the body had been taken. She then informed her relatives, and the police were also informed.
"The strange sight of the violated grave featuring a hole and an open coffin with no corpse inside was confronted by the police when they arrived at the scene."The police's initial investigation at the scene revealed that the suspect(s) broke through the barrier to gain entry to the cemetery.
