Popular young businessman from Thohoyandou shot and killed

The cold-blooded murder of well-known Thohoyandou businessman Mr Rudzani Victor Nemahagala has left Vhembe communities in utter shock and disbelief. Nemahagala (29), popularly known as Ras King, was shot by unknown assailants who had blocked his way while he was on his way to meet someone at Tshikhudini outside Thohoyandou. The incident happened on Friday (4th) at about 21:40.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, Nemahagala was driving along the Punda Maria road, towards the Dar es Salaam restaurant at Tshikhudini, when the incident happened. “A white Nissan NP 300 with an unknown registration number was parked in the road when the deceased turned into a gravel road. There were two unknown males, one seated inside the vehicle and another one standing outside. Shots were fired from the Nissan NP 300 towards his car, but he managed to drive away from the spot, colliding with two other motor vehicles that were parked beside the road. The Nissan NP 300 immediately drove off after the shooting. Emergency medical services declared him dead at the scene,” Ledwaba said. Nemahagala was fataly wounded during the shooting.

Nemahagala was known as a humble, philanthropic, and inspiring young businessman. He owned a fast-food outlet, which he ran from the University of Venda’s main gate, as well as a butchery and tavern at Tshikweta outside Thohoyandou. Soon after his killing was confirmed, social media was abuzz with friends, Univen students, relatives, and business colleagues sending messages of condolences to the family.

The deceased’s father, Mr. Nkhangweni Robert Nemahagala, could not contain his grief. “I received the sad news of the shooting at around 12:00 and rushed to the scene. The police had by then removed his body from the car. I could not stand the sight of his lifeless body. Rudzani was my youngest, and he was a go-getter who strove to improve the lives of everyone close to him. He helped many people, including needy learners. As a family, we all looked up to him. We are heartbroken about his death, especially since he leaves three young children, his wife, staff, and family behind, who all depended on him,” he said.

Robert Nemahagala said his son’s murder seemed to have been set up. “The people who killed him knew that he would drive along that road. They lay in wait for him to come. To show that they only wanted his life, they did not take anything. His gun, phones, and cash were not touched. We are putting all our hope in the police investigators to arrest the killers, so that they pay for their heinous deeds. As for now, we are busy preparing for his funeral,” he said.

Col Ledwaba said a murder docket had been opened and a manhunt launched to hunt down the killers. “Anyone with information that can assist us in locating the suspects may contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Takalani Siaga, at 082 469 2302. Alternatively, report to the nearest police station, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, or send a tip-off on the MysapsApp,” he said.

Nemahagala’s funeral will be held at Tshivhulana on Saturday, 12 August.
