Pupil kicked out of Midrand school for wearing natural dreadlocks

The school, Crowthorne Christian Academy is based in the North of Johannesburg, Midrand and is owned by principal Tanya Booysen and her husband Andries.

In a video that has now been circulating on social media sees how a man aggressively pushes the pupil along with her mother out of the classroom on Monday 14 August. The man in question is known as Henk to parents and said to be the principal’s husband.

The publication has also reported that according to the Gauteng department of education, the school has been operating illegally.

BLACK HAIR IS NOT A CRIME

In addition to the video that is circulating on social media, text messages between the 13-year-old’s mother and principal Tanya Booysen have emerged on social media. In the text messages Tanya is seen insisting that the 8th grade pupil should adhere the schools code of conduct by removing her hair.

“She needs to go and removed the extensions. She can return once she adheres to the code of conduct”, Tanya Booysen tells the parent.

In response the mother says: “I have been telling you there’s no extensions on my child’s hair. IT’S HER OWN BLACK HAIR… My child will not miss a class I paid for her school fees”.

Seeing Black woman and girls in 2023 still being marginalized and punished for the way they choose to wear their hair in comparison to white counterparts is extremely disheartening and disappointing. As a society we need to do better because Black hair is not a crime!
