The KZN education MEC steps in as students start fighting over desks

In the Friday incident, it is claimed that students engaged in physical altercation within the school, but the altercation proceeded beyond the school grounds.

On social media, videos of the incident have gone viral.Insiders claim that there is a severe desk shortage at the school, forcing some students to spend the entire day standing up to learn.

Additionally, a teacher who attempted to calm the scene was allegedly assaulted.Following the event, Mbali Frazer, the MEC for education in KwaZulu-Natal, called an urgent meeting with all pertinent parties at the school on Tuesday.

According to the department, due to the gravity of the situation, the conference included representatives from the Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma local municipality, local traditional authority, and members of the community.Frazer learned at the meeting that several of the school's classrooms are without desks.

The department claimed that information claiming that the administration of the school never put in a request for more desks upset them. The article claimed that various maintenance problems at Skofill Secondary had also gone unreported to the department. Some of the maintenance problems were allegedly caused by theft and vandalism.

According to Frazer, she issued an order requesting that Skofill receive the necessary desks and chairs by February 17.No student should be deterred from attending school due to a lack of desks and chairs, according to Frazer.

All parties concerned concurred that the students involved in the altercation should be subject to internal disciplinary measures.Frazer instructed the department's officials to give Skofill Secondary School improvements top priority and ordered two mobile classrooms to be delivered to the institution by the end of February.
